Austin Designer First from U.S. to Participate
in Guatemala's First National Design Conference

[Austin, TX, July 1999]

Marc English, principal of Marc English Design, became the first American designer to participate in Guatemala's first national design conference, Conferencia ReDiseno. Aside from leading workshops ("The Way of the Design Shaman: the Ecstatic Experience in the Creative Process") and giving the closing lecture ("A Means to an End: Identity & Graphic Design as a Business Strategy"), English also took his years of experience teaching (MassArt, NESAD, Southwest Texas State U.) and lead a discussion regarding education at Guatemala's Universidad Rafeal Landivar.

Held July 11-18, in Guatemala City, Conferencia ReDiseno was held at the Instituto Guatemalteco Americano (IGA) and organized by Olga Hazard, a Guatemalan native who established the country's first design studio, Tipos Graficart, in 1988. Hazard has been instrumental in founding Diseno Grupo Graphico, Guatemala's national design association. In English's capacity as a national board member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, we was able to offer insight to the fledgling group.

Also speaking to the audience that gathered from Guatemala and El Salvador, was editorial designer Michel Rendon, of France. Organized by Colloquia, IGA and ReDiseno Grupo Graphico, the weeks events were sponsored by IGA, Continental Airlines and Prensa Libre, Guatemala's national newspaper.

Said English, "It was certainly an honor to be asked to participate and share what I have gathered over the years. But for myself, it was a greater experience than I could have offered them. Or maybe it was mutual. I opened a window for them, and in turn I was introduced to a world and culture that I have long imagined. I brought home color, texture, weather and aromas that I someday hope to be able to incorporate in our studio's work."
