Millman suggests "Bad boys is a term used to describe a renegade character . . . The father of all [design] things bad boy, is none other than the late, great Tibor Kalman of M & Co. who was famously known for being really bad, saying "Rules are good. Break them. Isn't that what design is about, making something seem different from what it is?' Being different is certainly not all there is to being 'bad.' There is something extra as well, a certain take-no-prisoners attitude, a je ne sais quois of sorts.
"Not merely a . . . disregard for rules, but 'now that I know what rules are and how to break them, I'm going to go ahead and redefine them.' A certain attitude helps, but I truly believe that you can only be really bad when you are really good and this requires one important tactic: knowing the difference.
"Fortunately if bridging the gap between what is really good and really bad were that easy, then the world would be full of creative enterprise, and the term 'bad boy' - or 'bad girl' - would be obsolete.
"Happily this is not the case. There are still a few who manage to combine their given talent with the courage it takes to be both good and bad, with the ability it take to run their own uniquely successful and quite remarkable businesess."
On Bad Boys of Design I, Ms. Millman was joined by - according to her - "some of the world's finest designers . . . all superstars and all really, really good: James Victore, Mark Kingsley, Michael Ian Kaye and Armin Vit ."
Marc English, of Marc English Design, in Austin, Texas suggests that sequels are rarely as good as the original, and may well be worse, that Bad Boys II may as well be called "Not Quite So Bad Boys" or even "Second-rate Bad Boys" or even "Men that Just Aren't Good."
He goes on, "The Antoine Doinel film series by Truffault enriched the tale of the protaganist over the years, while 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' was a capstone to Sergio Leone's film trilogy. And yes, Linklater's 'Before Sunset' was heartfelt and poignant, but for every one of those, there are a slew of 'Rocky's, 'Rambo's and . . . well you get my point. Not every Odyssy had an Iliad coming after it. Even Schiller's 10th letter wasn't a good as his 9th." And he adds. "And I know some of these guys. Bennett is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Not a bad bone in his body."
English's agent and handler, Ms. Terry Stone of Los Angeles, has advised English "It's time to put your bad boy ways behind you, and instead capitalise on the facets that make you so unique, the fact that you are a smart man, the man who reads Homer in the original Greek." Of course, English believing that any publicity is good publicity asks "W.W.T.D.? - What would Tibor do?" and in fact knows the answer: go on the radio, while resolutely leaving his bad boy ways behind him. In that spirit he will be wearing a suit and tie while on the radio.
